As part of university coursework this project involved the invention of a festival for which a primary
logo/wordmark would be developed along with promotional posters for three mainline events and an animated
GIF intended to be used as social media advertising. Celluloid Film Festival, taking place in 1995,
highlights three movies from that year: Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels, Mathieu Kassovitz's La Haine, and
David Fincher's Se7en. The ethos of the film festival is showcasing gritty crime and thriller films which
lean towards an independent production styleall within a refined and sleek brand inline with 1990's
minimalism.
I made these choices as I am passionate about the films selected and the overall genre and
very inspired by 1990's and 2000's design.
All three posters include abstractly collaged visuals from their
respective movies. This is paired with a strong Sans Serif type system to provide structure in the face of
chaotic graphics. The logo combines concepts of both a film reel and ribbon, signaling traditional
filmmaking techniques and values along with prestige, with the animation bringing this logo to life to
indicate fluidity and modernity.
The visual style used in the posters was was created in Adobe Photoshop,
as was the animation. The logo and final poster
designs were assembled in Adobe Illustrator.
